Eric Lanlard

by Steven Hawkes

If like me you are a fan of intricate French pastries, and marvel at the wonders which are gorgeously displayed in the elegant windows of Normandy patisserie, then no doubt you have been an avid viewer of Channel 4′s excellent gastronomic delight “Glamour Puds” and being entertained by the Charming Eric Lanlard.

A native of Brittany, the young Eric with his passion for deserts and sweets, studied at the La Grand Patisserie , to be followed with an apprenticeship in Luxembourg with the master chocolatier Arens-Scheer after which national service called. The famous Roux brothers spotted his obvious talent and brought ambitious Frenchman to British shores, where he oversaw their expanding patisserie business for some six years. Feeling the time was right the enterprising Eric decided to stretch his wings and fly setting up on his own and not surprisingly took the British Patisserie culture by storm. Clients soon were hammering on his door, keen to taste and view his works of art made in sugary delicacies, and as such Eric’s reputation blossomed.

Madonna and Guy Ritchie, the super model Claudia Schiffer, Elizabeth Hurley and Amanda Holden have all fallen for the creative taste explosion that one of Eric’s bespoke cakes produces, and it is no wonder that television beckoned, for such works of art along with French charisma transfers perfectly to the small screen.

sacher-torte-sliceThe much acclaimed Glamour Puds, is well worth a view, even if you are not a foodie, for Eric pays homage to his hero 19th century chef Antonin Careme, with great sympathy and colour. Stylish photography, great cookery tips given his warm and personal way, Eric’s zest shines through, with his friendly narrative as he follows in his icons footsteps, recreating timeless masterpieces. Glamour Puds has quickly become one of the highlights of the week, feeding two great passions one obviously for food, the other for history.

Upon this success is Eric Lanlard Glamour Puds  (published by Harper Collins) , an amazing book, full of the shows recipes and stories which will tempt even the most faint hearted cooks to have a go. Full to bursting with delicious ingredients and Eric’s gentle tutelage, Glam Puds has made one thing certain, cakes in my house will never be the same again!!
